The deficit myth5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Indeed, while the terminology is different, one can make the case that MMT builds on fundamental precepts of Keynesian economics seasoned with a dash of Milton Friedman’s provocations. ![]() But as Stephanie Kelton, an economics professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and the most visible (and persuasive) advocate of MMT, makes strikingly clear in The Deficit Myth: Modern Monetary Theory and the Birth of the People’s Economy, much of what underpins the theory is widely accepted by mainstream economists - if not mainstream politicians and the public. It’s certainly been used that way by the political left, much as supply-side economics has been used by the right to justify tax cuts for the one percent. If you think Modern Monetary Theory is a rationale for ignoring federal budget deficits and spending whatever’s necessary to fund an ambitious progressive agenda - everything from tuition-free college to Medicare-for-All - you’re correct, in part. ![]()

Catch 22 author5/12/2023 ![]() “ Catch-22 is a funny book-vulgarly, bitterly, savagely funny. ![]() Those who are interested may be reminded of the Voltaire who wrote Candide and of the Kafka who wrote The Trial. Heller’s story rises above mere realism and soars into the stratosphere of satire, grotesque exaggeration, fantasy, farce and sheer lunacy. In any case, it is one of the most startling first novels of the year and it may make its author famous … Catch-22 is realistic in its powerful accounts of bombing missions with men screaming and dying and planes crashing. Wildly original, brilliantly comic, brutally gruesome, it is a dazzling performance that will probably outrage nearly as many readers as it delights. But there can be no doubt that it is the strangest novel yet written about the United States Air Force in World War II. ![]() It is not even a good novel by conventional standards. “ Catch-22, by Joseph Heller, is not an entirely successful novel. Just because you’re paranoid doesn’t mean they aren’t after you. ![]()

Neruda memoirs5/12/2023 ![]() On July 15, 1945, at Pacaembu Stadium in São Paulo, Brazil, he read to 100,000 people in honor of Communist revolutionary leader Luís Carlos Prestes. Colombian novelist Gabriel García Márquez once called him "the greatest poet of the 20th century in any language." In 1971 Neruda won the Nobel Prize for Literature, a controversial award because of his political activism. Neruda was accomplished in a variety of styles, ranging from erotically charged love poems like his collection Twenty Poems of Love and a Song of Despair, surrealist poems, historical epics, and overtly political manifestos. With his works translated into many languages, Pablo Neruda is considered one of the greatest and most influential poets of the 20th century. Neruda's pen name was derived from Czech writer and poet Jan Neruda Pablo is thought to be from Paul Verlaine. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Neruda assumed his pen name as a teenager, partly because it was in vogue, partly to hide his poetry from his father, a rigid man who wanted his son to have a "practical" occupation. Pablo Neruda was the pen name and, later, legal name of the Chilean writer and politician Neftalí Ricardo Reyes Basoalto. ![]()
